  Payment of any category made to an individual that exceeds the $600 threshold may be subject to scrutiny according to guidelines for Section 501(c)(3) portion of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code for Exempt Organizations. Under the law, beginning January 1, 2023, an examination of individual financial records to facilitate an orderly review of the individuals and organizations Third-Party Settlement Organization (TPSO) (Third-Party Settlement Organization is an organization that has the contractual obligation to make payments of third-party network transactions, often handling payments between someone providing goods/services and the purchaser may be required.) TPSO tax compliance, as well as individual payee compliance with income tax reporting. A participating payee, in the case of a third-party network transaction, is any person who accepts payment from a third-party settlement organization for a business or exempt organization transaction.
